Win-win resource management solutions can be achieved through korero and a Cultural Management Plan.

Development proposals on sites of high value to hapu can be upsetting. Often, proposals turn into conflict, ending up in the Environment Court. This article shows that win-win solutions are possible when hapu and developers talk constructively about the issues early in the process. The creation of a Cultural Management Plan – a document that states the rules around Maori cultural values at a location – can aid in this. This approach allows an open, honest, and respectful relationship between developers and Hapu, leading to positive, creative solutions.
